PGA Championship 2024 live updates: Round 4 leaderboard after Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy fall back

The leaderboard is packed with top players heading into Sunday afternoon, meaning a playoff could be highly likely.

How does a playoff at the PGA Championship work? It’s a bit different than other major championships.

The PGA uses a three-hole aggregate format rather than sudden-death play, meaning the player who posts the lowest score after those three holes wins.

No. 13 (the signature par-4 with an island green), No. 17 (the 472-yard par-4), and No. 18 (the reachable par-5) are the holes set to be used.

If players are still tied at the end of the playoff, they move onto sudden-death play on No. 18, 13, 17 and 18, repeated until a winner is determined.

Since 1958 (when the PGA Championship switched from a match-play tournament to stroke play) there have been 14 playoffs. The most recent playoff occurred between Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris at Southern Hills (2022), with Thomas coming out on top.
