Two police officers were shot early Monday morning in Queens in a shootout with a 19-year-old man whom they had attempted to pull over for riding a motorbike the wrong way down a one-way street, officials said.
One officer was shot in the leg and the other was shot in the front of his bulletproof vest, police officials said. The officers and the man, who was shot in the right ankle, are expected to survive.
Around 1:40 a.m., the two officers, who were on patrol in the East Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens, saw a man on a motorbike driving the wrong way down 82nd Street near 23rd Avenue, Edward A. Caban, the police commissioner, said at a news conference on Monday.
The officers, who were in a vehicle, tried to pull the man over, Mr. Caban said. The man got off the bike and ran.
The two officers got out of their vehicle and chased the man for several blocks before the man fired multiple shots at them, Mr. Caban said. The officers then returned fire, he said.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
